Mutual Respect

On a recent trip to a lesser-visited part of the Great Salt Lake, I found a complete living room set dumped along the scenic salty shores. Whoever brought it here then proceeded to pump the furniture full of bullets before leaving the scene.
I’m a “live and let live” kind of person. Those who know me can probably tell you I am not shy about expressing my views, some of which may be contentious, but I do so in closed forums and friendly discussions. I’m a firm believer that politics and faith are topics of significant enough gravity that they deserve to be discussed in depth, among willing participants, and should not be reduced to grandstanding and salesmanship. I respect fellow people, and their rights to their ideas and beliefs which may be very different from my own.
This, however, is something I wanted to share with the world. This is not an act of a juvenile prankster. This is a shameful act of vandalism and disrespect for others – an act of hubris and social degeneration. I hope readers of this journal can join me in condemning it.

Certainly. I can’t imagine anyone approving of such an act… not even the perpetrator, if he were to see this post. And therein lies the problem; such behavior is a matter of perceived impact & odds of getting caught…
When one thiks the earth is limitless, one does not see dumping old furniture in the desert as a ‘big deal,’ nor does one think an oil spill in the ocean as anything more than the proverbial ‘drop in the bucket.’ Ultimately those who could care less what happens to the whole planet are under the illusion that it is, essentially one of many, “surely a very large number”… yet we have *zero* evidence that another, habitable planet exists anywhere within reach to our species.
We need to realize this is the only home we’ve got. Only increased awareness of this fact can help us appreciate the true magnitude of our collective carelessness.
(IMO)
When I found this couch last spring, there were not bullet holes in it I don’t think. But I agree this is shameful.
I’ve also found an entire treadmill dumped in pieces on the road out there.
Even just shotgun shells by themselves all over the place suck, but one must consider the clientele I guess. Thanks for posting this.
Thanks for the article and concern.
