    Beautiful images, Guy.

Have you ever discussed on your blog why you shoot 35mm instead of, say, 4×5? I’m curious because I still think of 35mm as basically a journalist’s tool. Your photos, though, are singularly gorgeous. Why not capture them in a larger format?

My personal motive in asking is that I have been considering 4×5 in an attempt to get more into making such singular images. I’ve come at photography more as a naturalist and journalist and have always loved the portability and relatively low expense of shooting lots of images in a given location in 35mm. I would like to slow it down, though, and spend more time looking for images that are, well, more like yours! Your thoughts on the matter would be greatly appreciated.

    All the best.

Thanks for the kind words, John!

It’s not an easy question to answer online. There are many facets to it, including creative control, image quality, financial considerations when used professionally, and a seemingly infinite array of numerical comparisons that can be applied. Ultimately it comes to print quality, at least for my use, and I’ve performed exhaustive tests and comparisons before arriving at a level of comfort with the DSLR.

Perhaps the best answer I can give is to invite you over to my gallery to see the kind of results I’m getting in print. To me, that’s where the proverbial rubber meets the road.

About half of my portfolio was captured on 4×5 and 120 slide film (which I used exclusively for nearly a decade,) along with a couple of thousand chromes still in my files. I have no intention of selling my view camera any time soon although, admittedly, I use it less and less these days.

Absolutely stunning work, Guy. It all goes back to “the early bird gets the worm” theory and your timing is impeccable.

  4. Wonderful new images, Guy. Really stunning!
