Photo Essay Contest

| September 17, 2010

I am happy to announce my upcoming Creative Writing for the Nature Photographer class through Nature Photographers Network. Writing about your work, thoughts, musings, and experiences in the wild, whether in a personal journal or a formal magazine submission, can often be as rewarding as the making of a great image.

To help spread the word, I am also offering a chance to win a free 8×10 signed and matted print of your choice.

Here’s what you need to do:

  • E-mail me with a favorite image you made and a short essay related to it. This can be the story of the image itself, your personal thoughts and feelings about it, a narrative of the trip, or just about anything else you’d like to write about.
  • Agree to allow me to post the image and essay on this blog in the event that your entry is chosen as a winner or a runner-up.
  • Certify that you are the legal owner of all submitted images and text.

Here’s what you DON’T need to do:

  • Give up any rights to the image or the text other than allowing me to post them on this blog.
  • Purchase anything
  • Annoy your friends and followers by repeating silly tweets

All entries must be received by Saturday, October 2. A winner and a runner-up will be chosen by me and announced on Saturday, October 16. Both the winner and runner-up will be allowed to choose an image from my site for a free signed and matted 8×10 print.

The contest is open to anyone, anywhere. All entries must be in English.

Can it be a series of photos (say, less than 10) and an essay?

  2. Guy Tal says:

Leigh, I think that’s a great idea. A series of images will work.

  3. Nice idea, Guy. Again, how many tweets are too many? :)

  4. Guy Tal says:

Gary, for silly tweets: 1. For important tweets: a couple, well spaced, just to make sure anyone who could benefit will get them.
    It’s common sense, really…

  5. Dan Baumbach says:

    Beautiful photo. Is this new?

    - Dan.

  6. Man, this is an awesome photo! Love it…

  7. Guy Tal says:

Thanks guys! The image is from Alaska a couple of years ago.

  8. Samuel Losee says:

Ahhh I love this! Just curious could we enter 2 separate short essays, one with a series of images, and then another from a separate time with just one image?

  9. Guy Tal says:

Thanks Samuel! I’d love to read you essays, but I think we should keep it to one entry per person so the contest fair. If you’d like to send in two, just let me know which one is your official contest entry.

  10. Looking forward to entering and seeing what becomes of this. You know what would be a nice prize… a seat in the upcoming online class at NPN.

  11. Guy,

It would also be nice if at the end, you posted links to all the essays entered if they exist somewhere on the web for all of to read.

  12. Tom Nevesely says:

What a great idea for a contest Guy! I’ve already started jotting down notes on my selected image and will definitely enter the contest.
I also just signed up for your course because I would really like to get better at my writing.

  13. Sounds like a wonderful class and a cool contest.

  14. Guy Tal says:

Thanks again to everyone who sent in their essays. Keep them coming!
Youssef, that is a very fine idea but since I already received some submissions under the original terms, I hesitate to change the rules at this point. I’ll keep it in mind for the next one, though.

    Guy

  15. Great idea Guy.

What size would you like these?

  16. Guy Tal says:

    Thanks Paul!
A web-presentable size (600-800 pixels on the long side) would be great.
