The creative image is your own product, not the camera’s. If the camera alone can’t fully express your vision, then to hell with the camera!

  1. Jim Bullard says:

“If the camera alone can’t fully express your vision, then to hell with the camera!”

Cameras are inanimate objects with no ability to express anything because they have no emotions, no soul. But… a camera can be an expressive tool in the right hands. Expression is up to the photographer. The camera takes care of recording the image so that you can present it to others.

  2. Are not cameras like any other artist’s tools?

By themselves, painters tools just sit idle with no thoughts as to expression or creativity. However, a palette knife and a sable brush will create different effects on a canvas when wielded by an artist. That artist selects and applies the proper tool that enables him to express his vision.

The photographer, an artist as much as is the painter, selects the appropriate tool to express his vision also. Media, format, lens, etc. are no less valid as tools as are brushes or mallets and chisels in the hands of artists in other disciplines.
