Summer is Over

These maple trees grow in a beautiful canyon. I spent hours walking among them looking for a composition that would express the feeling of yellow leaves hanging in the air like fireflies.

Frosted Corn Lilies
Image code: #c000693
I first found frost-covered lilies a couple of years before making this image, and loved the way the ice accentuated their graceful lines, but could not find a good composition. I return to the same patch a few more times until about two years later, I found what I was looking for.

Let It Storm
Image code: #di001359
Aspens and willows welcome an early snow shower. Soon, a thick white blanket will erase most color until the following spring.
Caption inspired by this passage by Hermann Hesse:
"Say yes to everything, shirk nothing, don't try to lie to yourself. You are not a solid citizen, you are not a Greek, you are not harmonious, or the master of yourself, you are a bird in the storm. Let it storm!"

This was a large shallow pool the day before. Overnight, temperatures hovered around freezing, and in the morning I found these beautiful fallen maple and oak leaves captured in a layer of paper-thin ice. The ice melted within a couple of hours as the sun lit the canyon bottom.

It is easy, sometimes, to ignore the amazing variety of moods, colors, and intricate arrangements created by plants - trees and bushes and shrubs and grasses. They morph with the weather and the seasons and the hours of the day and always prove worthy companions in good and bad times.
